MUST-WATCH: Spooky season begins!

By James Mackin

October is here, which means it’s time to bust out candy, sweaters, and scary movies! And we’ve got some scary movies in this latest edition of the MUST-WATCH, but we have some lighter fare for people not looking to be scared as well! But what will take that top spot? You’ll have to keep reading to find out!

Hocus Pocus 2

Where to watch: Disney+

Let’s start this week with a spooky sequel!

Hocus Pocus 2 is the sequel to a very popular Disney film from 1993. For those who don’t know, the film is about three witches and sisters who were killed back in the late 17th century in Salem. But before they died, they placed a curse on a candle to resurrect them if it were ever lit. And this Halloween, Winnie Sanderson (played by Bette Midler from the Rose), Mary Sanderson (played by Kathy Najimy from Rat Race), and Sarah Sanderson (played by Sarah Jessica Parker from Sex and the City) are back! This film also stars Whitney Peak (from Gossip Girl), Tony Hale (from Arrested Development), and Doug Jones (from Star Trek: Discovery).

Blonde

Where to watch: Netflix

Next up, a controversial film about a beloved icon.

Blonde

This image released by Netflix shows Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe in a scene from Blonde. (Netflix via AP)

Blonde is a film about Marilyn Monroe, but it’s not a straight up up biopic. This is actually based on a novel by Joyce Carol Oates, and the film is adapted and directed by Australian filmmaker Andrew Dominik (who previously made the Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Killing Them Softly). This film stars Ana de Armas (from Knives Out and Blade Runner 2049) as the beloved actress, but this films focuses on the lows of her life more than the highs (well, some of the highs). It’s received a lot of criticism for the portrayal of the starlet, but de Armas has received nothing but praise for her dedicated performance. This film also stars Bobby Cannavale (from Boardwalk Empire), Adrien Brody (from the Pianist), and Julianne Nicholson (from Mare of Eastown).

Entergalactic

Where to watch: Netflix

Now it’s time for a multimedia project!

Entergalactic

Kid Cudi and Jessica Williams in Entergalactic, courtesy of Netflix.

Entergalactic is both a new album and a new animated tv show by rapper Kid Cudi. Cudi plays Jabari, a young artist who seems to be on the breakthrough of becoming a success. His life right now has entirely two focuses, be successful and be happy. But this starts to change when a beautiful new neighbour called Meadow (played by Jessica Williams from 2 Dope Queens) moves next door. She’s gorgeous, she’s artistic, and she’s just as into him as he’s into her. But does he really have the space for love in his life right now? What is more important, happiness with your public life or private life? This show also stars Timothee Chalamet (from Dune), Laura Harrier (from Spider-Man: Homecoming), and Vanessa Hudgens (from Spring Breakers).

You can watch this show on Netflix now!

Bros

Where to watch: Cinemas

Next up, let’s take a look at a queer romcom!

Bros is the first film written by Billy Eichner (from Parks and Recreation and Billy on the Street), and he also stars in it! He plays Bobby, a podcaster/author focused on the experience of gay men. Now in an era of Grindr, he’s not really sure how to interact with his fellow men, especially ones who are much more buff than he is. But this all changes when he meets a handsome hunk called Aaron (played by Luke Macfarlane from Killjoys). Bobby will do just about anything to make it work with this beefcake. This is also the first film to ever be made in Hollywood with an almost entirely gay cast and crew, it’s a gigantic step forward for representation!

You can watch this film in cinemas now!

The Munsters

Where to watch: Netflix

Last up, let’s take a trip to a spooky family’s home!

The Munsters is the latest film from horror filmmaker and musician Rob Zombie (the director of House of 1,000 Corpses, the Devil’s Rejects, and the Haunted World of El Superbeasto). Anyone who knows his previous films may think he’d be a shocking choice to take on this family friendly franchise, but he’s actually a huge fan of the Munsters and this was a dream project of Zombie’s for most of his life. In this new film set in the present day, Herman Munster (played by Jeff Daniel Philips from the Lords of Salem) is a new Frankenstein’s monster-type creature who’s taking the comedy scene by storm, and looking for love. And he just might find it with 150 year old vampire Lily Doomley (played by Sheri Moon Zombie from 3 from Hell).

You can watch this film on Netflix now!
