Higher levels of air pollution are expected in much of the Greater Toronto Area this evening.
Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga, Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Markham. The national weather agency warns says evening fireworks expected across the region as part of Diwali celebrations could contribute to ‘deteriorating air quality.’
CityNews meteorologist Jill Taylor says there is not enough air movement to clear out the smoke.
“Air quality may deteriorate if that smoke from fireworks remains at the ground level or starts to move down,” Taylor says. “Some people may really be sensitive to the smoke, consider taking extra precautions to reduce your exposure.”

Environment Canada says some people could experience increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath after being exposed to firework smoke.
“Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk,” the national weather agency says.
