Durham police render suspicious package safe

Durham police say a suspicious package found in a commercial area in Whitby has been rendered safe.

Officers were called to Thickson Road and Wentworth Street for reports of a suspicious package around 3 p.m.

The explosive disposal unit has been called to the scene and residents are asked to avoid the area unit it has been deemed safe.

Several roads in the area were closed, but have since reopened with the exception of Scotia Court.

The investigation is still ongoing.
