Drivers can expect major delays in south Mississauga this weekend with a partial closure of the QEW at Hurontario Street.
Starting at 10 p.m. on Friday, the QEW will be closed both ways at Hurontario until 5 a.m. on Monday.
Drivers will be forced onto the Hurontario off-ramps and then immediately be diverted back onto the highway using the Hurontario on-ramps.
Hurontario will also be closed between North Service and South Service roads, which means there will be no access to and from the QEW.
The closures are part of the long-term construction of the Hurontario LRT, which, when complete, will run from the Port Credit GO Station all the way up to Steeles Avenue. It is expected to be completed in the fall of 2024.
Construction has been taking place along Hurontario between Lake Shore Road and north of the QEW for the past year, with road widening and electrical installation being the main focus.
This weekend, road crews will be installing a “push box,” which is a large concrete tunnel that slowly gets pushed into position using hydraulic jacks. This will serve as a separate underpass for northbound traffic to use once the LRT is complete.
This method reduces the amount of full road closures in the long-term, at the cost of shutting down a portion of the highway for this weekend.
If your travels take you through Mississauga at all this weekend, be sure to plan ahead. Traffic on the QEW is sure to be snarled as it gets diverted to the off-ramps and back to the on-ramps.
Drivers looking to get onto the QEW will have to use either Erin Mills Parkway, Mississauga Road or Cawthra Road. Metrolinx will post detours guiding motorists to Cawthra.
Residents and businesses near the work site can expect increased traffic on local streets, and will hear noise and vibration caused by trucks, excavators, backhoes, and other construction equipment.
