Ikea announces small-format store to open at Scarborough Town Centre in 2023

What's different about the new Ikea store in downtown Toronto? Plus, why are McDonald's and Wendy's facing a $50 million lawsuit? Richard Southern has the day's top business stories.

On the back of reporting a spike in store visits and sales growth over the past year, staff at Ikea have announced the popular furniture and accessories chain will be expanding in Toronto.

According to a statement posted on the Ikea Canada website Tuesday morning, the company will be opening a second small-format concept store at Scarborough Town Centre in the summer of 2023.

The statement said the 7,500-square-metre store will be located on the ground floor at the northeast part of the mall near McCowan Road and Highway 401.

Company staff said it will be similar to the downtown Toronto location that opened earlier in the year and will be the second slimmed-down store in Canada.

The current closest store location is on Provost Drive, northwest of Leslie Street and Highway 401, in North York.

The company reported it saw approximately 26 million customers through store doors by the end of its annual financial year on Aug. 31, representing a 123-per-cent increase in customers.

Ikea staff also said in the same period there was a 1.3-per-cent increase in sales, totalling $2.6 billion.

When it comes to food, it too saw a jump. The report said there was a 160-per-cent increase in sales with Canadians buying $97.5-million worth of food, including around 20 million meatballs.
