Which GTA schools will close next week if education workers strike

Another strike looming on the horizon for CUPE's education workers. They have set a strike deadline for Monday morning. So far no contract deal has been made. Faiza Amin with the latest.

It could be back to virtual learning for most GTA students next week as thousands of Ontario education workers are threatening to walk off the job amid ongoing labour unrest.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced Wednesday that it filed a five-day strike notice, saying that after two full days of bargaining, talks with the province have broken down once more.

It means the union will be in position to strike starting on Monday, Nov. 21.

Here is what GTA school boards are planning in the event of a full strike.

Toronto District School Board

The TDSB will close for in-person learning and move to synchronous learning for any students who can connect online right away.

The board says schools will distribute devices to students, but warns it may take several days to get them to students who require them. Parents will hear from schools about details on requesting a device for remote learning.

Toronto Catholic District School Board

TCDSB schools will close for in-person learning and students will have access to remote synchronous learning for the duration of a strike.

Peel District School Board

PDSB schools will close for in-person learning and students will participate in synchronous remote learning.

Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board

Schools will close and the board will switch to remote synchronous learning.

Halton District School Board

HDSB elementary schools will stay open for in-person learning for all grades on Monday before switching to remote synchronous learning starting on Tuesday, Nov. 22.

All students with special education needs will also switch to remote learning starting on Tuesday.

High schools will stay open for in-person learning for the duration of a strike.

Halton Catholic District School Board

HCDSB schools will close to all students for in-person learning for the duration of a strike. Students will move to synchronous learning.

“This includes all secondary credit courses offered through Thomas Merton Adult and Continuing Education,” the board says.

York District School Board

Schools will close for in-person learning on Monday and teachers will communicate with their class about learning plans during the closure.

The board is reminding parents to ask students to take all personal belongings home at the end of this week.

York Catholic District School Board

YCDSB schools will move to synchronous virtual learning on Monday and students will maintain their regular daily learning schedules. Schools will be closed and there will be no supervision available for students.

St. Teresa of Calcutta virtual school will proceed with classes as usual.

Durham District School Board

The DDSB has not laid out definitive learning plans but says “parents/guardians should be prepared that schools may be closed starting on Monday for an indefinite period.”

The board says schools cannot operate safely if education workers are on strike.

Durham Catholic District School Board

The board says schools will close for in-person learning in the event of a strike. Parents are being asked to make childcare arrangements for Monday and beyond.
