The Toronto Humane Society has raised more than $100,000 in charitable donations days after the shelter was the subject of an overnight theft when two men allegedly stole a rescue van and other life-saving items.
Jacques Messier, the organization’s chief executive officer, said on Thursday the community came together to help the shelter when it was needed most.
“In less than 48 hours, we have recovered the cost of repairs, stolen property, and increasing security measures so this does not happen again. You have helped us raise $100,000,” he said.
“From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of everyone at Toronto Humane Society, we are so grateful for the support our community has shown us — especially in times that are already tight for everyone. With your support, we will be able to continue our operations.”
Staff said the theft happened on Monday. Surveillance footage released by the Toronto Humane Society appeared to capture two men who allegedly broke into the facility and stole the rescue vehicle.

“Today, we should have woken up looking forward to what the day would bring,” said Hannah Sotropa, a spokesperson with the Toronto Humane Society, who confirmed none of the animals at the shelter were harmed.
“Instead, we woke up sad, confused, and above all, heartbroken.”
The vehicle was described as “more than just a van” as it was “a rescue tool, a mobile lifeline that has carried hundreds of animals to safety.”
The organization initially estimated $60,000 in damages, which later rose to $100,000.
Staff said they filed a report with the Toronto Police Service. The two men are still wanted by officers.
