Suspect in death of Canadian-Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala arrested: reports

A man wanted in connection to the death of a notable Punjabi musician-turned-politician has been arrested in the United States, according to media reports out of India.

Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, also known around the world by his stage name Sidhu Moose Wala, was killed on May 29, 2022 while driving his car in Mansa, a district in northern India’s Punjab state. His death came just a day after Punjab Police ordered the withdrawal of security details from Wala and several hundred others in a bid to clamp down on what it called “VIP culture.”

At the time of his death Indian investigators said Wala’s murder was part of an inter-gang rivalry.

Satinderjeet Singh, also known as Goldy Brar, claimed responsibility for the singer’s death in a Facebook post, saying Wala was killed “in retaliation” for the murder of a Youth Akali Dal leader Vicky Middukhera.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was quoted by Indian media as saying Brar had been arrested in California 10 days ago and that efforts were underway to extradite him back to India.

Wala, who began his music career in Brampton before returning to his home of Punjab, was a controversial figure in part due to his lyrical style. In 2020, police charged him under India’s Arms Act for allegedly promoting gun culture in one of his songs. He was popular in the United Kingdom and Canada, and many called his death a major loss to the music industry.

DJ Reminisce, a South Asian radio broadcaster and music entertainer who had previously worked with Moose Wala, called him a transformative artist who changed the way South Asian music was performed and was a voice of the Punjabi working class.
