Toronto residents will be paying more for garbage and water in the new year after city council approved a three per cent increase for Solid Waste Management Services and Toronto Water.
A single-family household with an extra-large bin will see their garbage bill increase by almost $16 while the average Toronto household will see $29 added to their water bill in 2023.
Residents with a small garbage bin will see an increase of almost $9, just over $10 for a medium bin and almost $14 for a large bin.
“This is the right thing to do now to avoid a larger increase later in 2023,” Mayor John Tory said, noting the increases have been kept to below inflation levels.
Residents will get to have their say in the 2023 budget process starting Jan. 10, 2023.
The mayor’s proposed budget is expected to be released on Feb. 1 and city council will vote on it on Feb. 14.
