A multi-day winter storm rolling into the GTA has already cancelled flights and forced many to adjust their holiday travel plans — is also having an impact on public transit.

In anticipation of the storm, the TTC says it will take 41 bus stops out of service as of 5 a.m. Friday “until further notice.” The transit agency says this is to prevent buses from getting stuck on known icy trouble spots on hills.

The TTC is also planning to cancel service on the Line 3 Scarborough SRT as of 9:30 a.m. Shuttle buses will replace the train service and run between Kennedy and McCowan stations.

“As the weather turns, the line will be closed and fully replaced with buses until weather allows for it to re-open,” the TTC said.

GO Transit says the severe winter weather will also have an impact on its train and bus service on Friday.

Customers on the Lakeshore East line will be forced to change trains at Union Station if they plan to continue on to the Lakeshore West line. The change is being made in order to keep the trains running smoothly and prevent ice and snow build-up.

“There will be no early homebound service and we are running on a special schedule which will include significant service changes,” the provincial transit agency said. “Please give yourself extra time to get to where you’re going.”

School boards across southern Ontario have cancelled classes due to the storm while the City of Toronto has opened three warming centres:

  • Scarborough Civic Center, 150 Borough Drive
  • Metro Hall, 55 John Street
  • Mitchell Field Community Center, 89 Church Ave.

The storm is also having a major impact on flights with WestJet cancelling all flights in and out of Pearson Airport on Friday.

Air Canada says it has cancelled a number of domestic flights Friday but says it plans to go ahead with scheduled international flights.
