The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a man fell to his death during an alleged break-in at an apartment building in North York.
Toronto police say they received reports that someone broke into a high-rise apartment unit near Bathurst Street and Drewry Avenue around 5:10 a.m. on Sunday.
It is alleged the man broke into one unit and was attempting to climb over a balcony to gain access to a second unit.
The Special Investigations Unit say officers arrived to find the man on a balcony and attempted to negotiate with him from a neighbouring balcony.
“At approximately 6:50 a.m., the man fell from the balcony to the ground below,” reads an SIU release. “He was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
Two investigators and one forensic investigator have taken over the case.
The SIU is called in to investigate whenever police are involved in a death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
