Man wanted in Markham assault linked to separate violent incident in Scarborough

A man wanted for assaulting a woman in Markham is linked to a separate incident in Scarborough that saw a woman choked and robbed by someone from behind her.

The incident in York Region happened between 8 and 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 1 when a woman was walking through an alleyway from McCowan Road to Woodhall Road. It’s alleged a man appeared and assaulted the victim before dragging her between houses.

Police said sensor lights were activated after someone walked by with their dog, which forced the man to flee the scene.

Investigators say the man likely travelled on the TTC after attending Scarborough Town Centre that same evening. They’re concerned he followed other women before the assault.

In an update on Thursday, authorities confirmed that Toronto police are investigating a similar incident involving the same suspect.

Toronto police said just after midnight on Feb. 2, a woman was walking alone in the Brimley Road and Lawrence Avenue East area in Scarborough when a man appeared from behind and choked her before stealing her cell phone.

Surveillance video from Scarborough Town Centre was released in hopes of identifying the suspect. Authorities are urging the man to turn himself in.
