Canada Post says there’s been a “rapid and unprecedented” increase in mailbox vandalism in Toronto recently, forcing the Crown corporation to take several mailboxes out of service.
CityNews spotted multiple mailboxes wrapped in plastic and caution tape in the Bathurst and Lawrence area on Friday and there have been similar reports of damaged boxes in The Beaches and other pockets of the city.
Canada Post tell CityNews it has “ramped up our processes to perform repairs and replace boxes where necessary as quickly as possible.”
“Customers may notice damaged mailboxes wrapped in plastic while they await repairs. This is to ensure customers do not deposit mail in boxes that are damaged or unsecured.”

Canada Post says it hopes to have the affected mailboxes back in service shortly.
“In the meantime, a sign will be placed on damaged boxes directing customers to the closest location to deposit their mail,” it said.
“Customers can also go to one of many nearby post offices to deposit their mail if that’s more preferable or accessible until the boxes are fixed.”
Canada Post says its security teams are investigating the incidents.
