Man shot by police after allegedly threatening people with knife; SIU investigating

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a man in his 30s was shot by a police officer in North York.

Officers were called to the area of Black Creek and Trethewey drives just before 8 a.m. on Monday for reports of a person with a knife.

Toronto police allege a man was walking his dog in a nearby park when he got into an altercation with another man. The 31-year-old man with the dog pulled out a knife and allegedly threatened the other man.

Police responded within minutes due to Toronto Police 12 Division being located right across the street from the park.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says multiple shots were fired by a responding officer after an interaction between the man with the knife and police. Two other officers discharged tasers during the interaction.

“I understand there was a short foot pursuit from the park into an intersection nearby,” says SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette, adding the scene is spread out over a distance. She says a knife was recovered at the scene.

The responding officers provided first aid to the wounded man until paramedics arrived at the scene, according to the SIU. The man was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

There is no word on any charges or if anyone else was injured.

Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident to contact them.

The SIU has invoked their mandate and say six investigators have been assigned to the case. The SIU is an independent government agency investigating police interactions that result in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

Black Creek Drive has re-opened in both directions between Lawrence and Eglinton avenues. Trethewey has also re-opened.
