A student at a Georgetown high school was critically injured after being assaulted inside a classroom. Melissa Nakhavoly has more.

A teenager is in custody after a student at Georgetown District High School had to be airlifted to a trauma centre after a violent classroom attack on Thursday.

Halton police Const. Steve Elms said a male suspect broke into a classroom and attacked the student with an “edged weapon.”

It’s not yet clear if the suspect is a student at the school. Police described the attack as “targeted” but haven’t revealed a possible motive.

“It kind of gives me anxiety knowing that I go to that school and that just happened in my class,” said Caitlin, a student at the school. “He was arguing with this kid about – I have no idea what – and then it just escalated and then he stabbed him three to four times in the face.”

Ornge ambulance tells CityNews it transported the student to a trauma centre in critical condition. The age or gender of the victim was not revealed.

In an update, police said the victim was in non-life threatening condition in hospital.

Late Thursday night, police said a 17-year-old male had been arrested and faces charges of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The school was placed under lockdown for several hours at around 3 p.m. while police investigated. Three other Georgetown schools – Holy Cross Elementary, Christ the King Secondary, and Gary Allan – were also placed in hold and secures for the duration of the investigation.
