A Toronto police officer is facing a professional misconduct hearing in connection with the death of Daniella Mallia last year.
Const. Anson Alfonso was one of two officers who met with Mallia and her boyfriend in August 2022 after she called the police to report she was being harassed and threatened by him.
Investigators allege Alfonso didn’t take several important evidence-gathering steps, engaged in victim-blaming, and ultimately didn’t press charges.
Three days later, Mallia was killed.
“I am concerned about the alleged misconduct in this case, and want to reassure the public, particularly those who are vulnerable, that officers respond to Intimate Partner Violence calls on a daily basis, and they do so with compassion and professionalism.” police chief Myron Demkiw said in a statement. “Those who fail to follow procedure or to meet our clear professional standards will be held to account.”
Mallia’s ex-boyfriend, Dylon Dowman, has been charged in her death. His case is before the courts.
None of the allegations against constable Alfonso have been proven in court. His partner is also expected to appear at a tribunal to face misconduct charges.
