Serious crash closes eastbound 401 collector lanes in Scarborough

A stretch of Highway 401 in Scarborough was closed for several hours following an early morning crash that sent a man to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The two-vehicle collision occurred in the eastbound collector lanes at Markham Road around 3 a.m. Thursday when an SUV crashed into the back end of a Canada Post truck.

The closure snarled traffic for early morning commuters with the collector lanes closed from east of Kennedy Road to Markham Road until they were reopened just before noon.

Police tell CityNews the driver of the SUV, a 38-year-old man from Whitby, became trapped as a result of the crash. He was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

Photos and footage from the scene show a badly damaged SUV with debris strewn across lanes of the highway.

The investigation is ongoing. There is no word on what caused the crash.
