Mississauga man accused of selling lethal substance linked to suicides appears in court

The Mississauga man accused of selling a deadly substance online to people at risk of self-harm has had his bail hearing put over after appearing in court on Monday.

Kenneth Law was arrested earlier this month and is charged with two counts of counselling or aiding suicide after an investigation into two recent deaths in the area. His bail hearing was put over until May 23 after he retained new council and they needed more time to prepare.

Authorities in Peel Region opened an investigation following a report from the Times of London in the United Kingdom that connected Law with seven suicides.

Peel police allege Law used several websites to market and sell sodium nitrite, a legal substance which is commonly used to cure meats, but can be deadly.

Police say their investigation has revealed at least 1,200 packages were sent to 40 countries.

Sodium nitrite is a salt compound and can be lethal when ingested in high concentrations. Intentional consumption of specific amounts of the substance can reduce oxygen levels, impair breathing and result in death.
