Byelection mail-in voting procedures modified after drop box vandalized

Toronto Elections has changed the process for those electing to use the mail-in voting option after one of its drop boxes was vandalized.

Toronto police say they are investigating after the mail-in voting drop box at the Wellesley Community Centre on Sherbourne Street was vandalized around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday night.

Toronto Elections says drop box locations are monitored by security cameras and are emptied on a daily basis. The box at the community centre was last emptied at 9:45 a.m. on the day it was vandalized, adding approximately seven mail-in voting packages were damaged in the incident.

“Voters who dropped off their completed mail-in voting package at Wellesley Community Centre on June 6 between 9:45 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. are asked to contact Toronto Elections to review the options available to them to ensure their vote is counted,” the city said in a statement.

As a result of the incident, Toronto Elections says it will be moving all drop boxes inside the locations where they are currently placed.

The deadline for mail-in voting is June 15 at noon.

Advance voting begins June 8 and will run for six consecutive days until June 13.

Election day is June 26.
