Man in 20s fatally shot during outdoor gathering at Etobicoke townhouse

Toronto Police are on the hunt for a suspect or suspects after a shooting in Rexdale killed one person. Carl Hanstke has the latest details.

A man in his 20s is dead following a late night shooting at an outdoor gathering in north Etobicoke.

Emergency crews were called to a townhouse complex on Orpington Crescent, in the area of Kipling Avenue and Albion Road, around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Residents say there was an outdoor gathering of approximately 20 people when multiple shots were fired. The group scattered when the shooting occurred.

Officers arrived to find a 25-year-old man alone on the ground with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It was extremely lucky that nobody else was shot,” says Toronto police Det. Sgt. Brandon Price.

Stray bullets struck parked cars in the area and another struck a television inside a nearby home.

Police say the suspect vehicle was seen fleeing the area southbound on Orpington Crescent. It’s described as a dark-coloured SUV with a potentially broken window.

Investigators say they are looking to speak to a number of witnesses who left the scene.

Orpington Crescent was closed in both directions at Kendleton Drive for the investigation, but roads have since reopened.

The Toronto Police Service’s homicide unit has taken over the investigation.
