Maple Leafs goalie Matt Murray out indefinitely, placed on long-term injured reserve

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced goaltender Matt Murray is out indefinitely and will be placed on long-term injured reserve ahead of the 2023-24 season.

The team traded for Murray ahead of last season and opened the year with the 29-year-old and Ilya Samsonov as a starting tandem.

Murray had an injury-prone debut season with the club, only starting 24 games and finishing with a .903 save percentage and 3.01 goals against average. Samsonov eventually took over the majority of starts in net by mid-season and started in the playoffs.

Joseph Woll started two games in place of an injured Samsonov in Toronto’s second-round playoff series loss to the Florida Panthers last season, with Murray settling in as the backup.

The two-time Stanley Cup winning Murray signed a four-year contract with the Ottawa Senators in 2020 worth $6.25 million per season. He is set to be a free agent after the 2023-24 season.

Samsonov was recently awarded a one-year, $3.55-million contract with the Leafs by an independent arbitrator. Some pundits surmised the team could buy out Murray’s contract to clear cap space after the signing of Samsonov.

The club has undergone significant changes this offseason with the departure of several free agents, including Ryan O’Reilly, Luke Schenn, Noel Acciari, Alex Kerfoot and Justin Holl. Earlier this month, the team signed forwards Max Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi to one-year deals.
