Rainfall statements ended for Toronto and GTA

A special weather statement for Toronto and the GTA warning of heavy rainfall has ended.

Environment Canada had called for between 30 to 50 millimetres of rain to fall across the region, including Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan and Durham regions due to heavy rain and thunderstorms on Saturday.

The statement was ended just before 2 p.m.

The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority issued a warning about increase flows of rivers and streams in the area.

“All TRCA rivers within the GTA may experience higher than normal flows and water levels for the next few days,” the regional authority said in a statement. “The combination of slippery, unstable banks, and changing water levels could create hazardous conditions in and near rivers or other water bodies.”

A rainfall warning remains in effect for Niagara Falls, calling for upwards of 50 millimetres of rain.

“The storms in these regions have been consistent and heavy, at times,” said Lam. “Flooding for lakes, creeks, and streams is also a concern with this much rainfall in such a short amount of time.”

All statements and warnings were expected to end Saturday evening.
