Toronto Blue Jays recall top 30 prospect Davis Schneider

The Toronto Blue Jays have recalled prospect Davis Schneider from the triple-A Buffalo Bisons, the club announced on Friday.

Infielder Ernie Clement was optioned to the Bisons, while reliever Jay Jackson was reinstated from the family medical emergency list. The Blue Jays announced reliever Thomas Hatch was designated for assignment.

Schneider, Toronto’s 28th-ranked prospect according to MLB.com, plays multiple positions on the field, including second base, left field, first base and third base. The New Jersey native was drafted in the 28th round of the 2017 draft.

The 24-year-old has been one of the Blue Jays’ best developmental stories this season. He’s hit .275 /.416/.553 across 87 games with the Bisons, with a team-leading 21 home runs, 64 RBIs and 21 doubles. He’s also stolen nine bags this year.

Schneider has risen up the minor-league system thanks to a good approach at that plate that has seen him limit strikeouts and show off his power. He’s expected to provide the Blue Jays with a spark after Toronto lost three of four to the division-leading Baltimore Orioles, scoring only 10 runs in the series.

Clement, 27, has appeared in 13 games with the Blue Jays, splitting time with the Bisons this season.

Jackson rejoins the Blue Jays after tending to the premature birth of his newborn. The 35-year-old has been steady in Toronto’s bullpen this season, with a 0.53 ERA in 13 games and 18 strikeouts in 17 innings.

Hatch, 28, was acquired by the Blue Jays from the Chicago Cubs for David Phelps in 2019. He’s pitched four seasons in Toronto, mainly split between the Bisons. Hatch has thrown only four innings in the majors this year.

The Blue Jays now have seven days to trade or place him on irrevocable waivers. Toronto recently did the same with Mitch White and Trent Thornton, who was traded to the Seattle Mariners for infielder Mike McCoy after being designated for assignment.
