MUST-WATCH: Only the biggest stars in the Top 10

By James Mackin

The latest season of Only Murders in the Building is here, and it’s bringing some major talent this year! But will the latest season of this fantastic comedy reign from the top spot, or could it go to a miniseries about the opioid epidemic? Perhaps a film about Dracula’s adventures on the ocean? You’ll have to keep reading to find out!

Painkiller

Where to watch: Netflix

First up, let’s start with a dramatic miniseries!

Painkiller is a show similar to Dopesick. It’s a fictionalized version of the real-life investigation into Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family, specifically their role in the creation of the opioid epidemic. This show takes its inspiration from a New Yorker article called “The Family That Built an Empire of Pain” by Patrick Radden Keefe, as well a book by Barry Meier called “Pain Killer: An Empire of Deceit and the Origin of America’s Opioid Epidemic,” while taking some dramatic liberties. Matthew Broderick (from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) plays Richard Sackler, the real-life former chairman of the company. Uzo Aduba (from Orange is the New Black) plays a lawyer investigating the company’s role in the ongoing epidemic, determined to bring them to justice. This show also stars Taylor Kitsch (from True Detective), Clark Gregg (from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), and Ana Cruz Kayne (from Barbie).

Red, White & Royal Blue

Where to watch: Prime Video

Next up, it’s time for some royal romance!

Red, White & Royal Blue

Red, White & Royal Blue is a romcom about two men in very similar positions, but in rather different cultures. Alex (played by Taylor Zakhar Perez from Minx) is the son of the first female President of the United States, and he encounters Prince Henry (played by Nicholas Galitzine from Purple Hearts) at a royal function. The two accidentally cause a diplomatic incident, and they must pretend to be friends in order to save both of their families from embarrassment. Despite the fact that neither of them actually enjoys each other’s company, the two realize they might have more in common. This film also stars Uma Thurman (from Kill Bill), Stephen Fry (from Blackadder), and Rachel Hilson (from Love, Victor).

The Last Voyage of the Demeter

Where to watch: Cinemas

Next up, it’s time for some horror on a boat!

The Last Voyage of the Demeter

Javier Botet in the Last Voyage of the Demeter, courtesy of Universal Pictures.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a unique film, as it’s based on only one chapter of the novel Dracula. It covers the time when Dracula travelled from Eastern Europe to England in a coffin on a ship, with the crew none the wiser until bodies start turning up with two holes in their necks. A young doctor (played by Corey Hawkins from Straight Outta Compton) begins to suspect there is a suspicious passenger hiding on the ship, one who only comes out at night. This film also stars Aisling Franciosi (from Black Narcissus), Liam Cunningham (from Game of Thrones), and Javier Botet (from Slender Man).

Strange Planet

Where to watch: Apple TV+

Next up, let’s take a trip to an absurd world!

Strange Planet is based on a webcomic of the same name, one that depicts a world filled with blue skinned humanoid creatures. The planet they live on is a strange one, but one that remarkably similar to ours in its absurdities. It paints a satirical portrait of our modern world, and all of its strange idiosyncrasies that might sound normal initially but don’t quite hold up to scrutiny. Created by Dan Harmon (one of the creators of Rick and Morty), this show also stars Danny Pudi (from Community), Tunde Adebimpe (from She Dies Tomorrow), and Lori Tan Chinn (from Orange is the New Black).

Only Murders in the Building (Season 3)

Where to watch: Disney+

Last but not least, they’re back!

When we last left the murder podcaster stars of Only Murders in the Building, Oliver’s (played by Martin Short from Clifford) getting ready to premiere his new Broadway play. Except on opening night, the star (played by Paul Rudd from Ant-Man) dies on stage. Alongside Charles (played by Steve Martin from the Jerk) and Mabel (played by Selena Gomez from Spring Breakers), the three have got to solve this murder before it leads to the cancellation of their play. This new season also stars Michael Cyril Creighton (from Spotlight), and Meryl Streep (from Sophie’s Choice).
