Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a hit-and-run crash in Mississauga early Wednesday morning left a female cyclist dead.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Airport Road and Thamesgate Drive, north of Derry Road, around 4:30 a.m.

Police say a woman who was riding a bike was struck by a vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle involved left the area before officers arrived.

According to the Special Investigations Unit, Peel police located a car parked in the area of Airport Road and Morning Star Drive shortly after 3 a.m. After the officer spoke with the driver, he returned to his cruiser to verify the information. At that time the driver fled the scene.

The SIU said the vehicle was located on Goreway Drive, south of Rexdale Boulevard just before 4 a.m.

The agency did not provide further details as to the driver’s whereabouts or if there may have been a police pursuit prior to the cyclist being struck.

    The driver remains outstanding.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
