Streetcar service on St. Clair sidelined until at least next summer starting Sunday

The TTC began rolling out a series of bus and streetcar changes on Sunday. Some of the changes are due to construction and others are because of enhancements thanks to temporary funding. Nick Westoll reports.

Construction and infrastructure work will force riders on the busy St. Clair streetcar route to take buses for at least the next year.

Starting Sunday, the TTC says the 512 streetcars will be replaced with buses from St Clair Station to Gunns Loop until the summer of 2024 so that work can be done to upgrade the overhead power system as well as station, track and concrete repairs along the transit corridor. The work is being done at the same time as major infrastructure upgrades are being performed by Metrolinx, Toronto Water and the City of Toronto.

The TTC says buses on St. Clair will arrive approximately every three minutes during peak periods, and every six-to-10 minutes during off-peak times. Stops will be served at the curbside along the route.

Due to work being done inside St. Clair West station, buses will utilize a temporary stop outside the station on St. Clair Avenue West while at St. Clair station buses will board at the upper-level streetcar loop. Customers on the 33 Forest Hill, 126 Christie, 90 Vaughan and 312 night buses will also see changes to service at St. Clair West station.

Due to Ontario Line construction on the De Grassi Street bridge, service changes are being made to the 501 Queen routes as of Sunday.

The 501 Queen streetcar service will be replaced by 505 Dundas streetcars on Queen Street East from Broadview Ave to Neville Park Loop from September 3 to September 22. After that, a new 501D Queen bus service will operate between Neville Park Loop and Church Street until October 8.

The resumption of streetcar service to Long Branch has been delayed as major infrastructure work continues in the King Street West, Queen Street West, The Queensway, and Roncesvalles Avenue intersection area. Replacement busses and previous streetcar diversions will continue “until work is completed later this fall,” said the TTC.

Meanwhile, the 506 Carlton streetcars will resume service at Main Street Station on Sunday following the completion of critical repairs to the bus and streetcar loop.
