Woman dead after being hit by dump truck in midtown Toronto

Toronto police say a woman has died after she was hit by a dump truck on Monday.

Authorities were called to the Davisville Avenue and Mount Pleasant Road area just after 10:30 a.m. for reports of someone being struck by a vehicle.

Toronto Police Service (TPS) Duty Inspector Jeff Bangild told reporters an elderly woman was walking with the assistance of a walker when she was hit by the truck.

According to police, the woman entered the south crosswalk on a pedestrian walk signal, when the dump truck began a right-hand turn onto southbound Mount Pleasant Road as the traffic signal turned green.

The dump truck struck the pedestrian, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

The woman is not being identified at this time. Insp. Bangild said charges are pending as the investigation continues, noting that the victim appeared to be walking with the proper road signals and had the right of way.

The intersection will be closed for the investigation, and a heavy police presence is expected in the area.
