Two men have been arrested and charged in an ongoing investigation into the sales of fraudulent concert and sporting event tickets across the GTA, which cost victims over $100,000.
Peel Regional Police said a comprehensive investigation was launched in February 2024 after multiple fraud reports. Two men, 37-year-old Jaspal Thiara of Toronto and 29-year-old Jordan Cordeiro of Mississauga, were arrested as a result.
It’s alleged that the two men solicited several people through relationships and social media. After the victims paid the two accused for sporting and concert tickets, they received phony emails and receipts disguised as being from legitimate and reputable ticket sales companies.
Authorities believe the victims lost over $100,000 combined in the alleged scam.
Cordeiro was arrested on March 19, 2024, and charged with fraud under $5,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 22, 2024.
Thiara was arrested on Wednesday and charged with defrauding the public. He was held for a bail hearing and appeared in court that same day.
Police released Thiara’s photo, noting that an image of Cordeiro will be released at a later date.
Investigators also shared various tips to avoid the potential fraudulent sale of fake tickets, including buying from reputable sources and verifying the tickets’ authenticity.
“We encourage members of the public to buy from official ticket sellers or trusted resale platforms,” a police spokesperson wrote in a news release. “Double-check ticket details by verifying through the official website or calling the organizer directly. Ensure you are transacting on the correct payment platform. Beware of pop-up ads.”
Police add that if a deal appears too good to be true, it probably is.
