SIU investigating after Toronto cops discharge less-lethal firearms seriously injuring man

The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in after an officer discharged a sock round and two other officers that discharged less-lethal firearms at a 56-year-old man who had allegedly stabbed an individual on Saturday morning.
The SIU says Toronto Police were called around 7:40 a.m. to an apartment near the Jane Street and St. Clair Avenue West area to reports of a stabbing and a man with a staple gun.
According to the SIU, officers located the man in the hallway where he approached them with the staple gun. Shortly after, an officer discharged a firearm after the man barricaded himself in his apartment unit, but he was not struck.
“Emergency Task Force officers responded and attempted to negotiate with the man. After a time, officers entered his unit, and one officer discharged a less-lethal firearm. Officers also discharged conducted energy weapons at the man,” said the SIU in a statement.
They also say the 56-year-old man was arrested and remains in the hospital with a serious injury.
No officers were injured.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
