A teen boy is in custody after a Mississauga house was set on fire, and a dog was found suffering from injuries in the area of Cawthra and Lakeshore. As Jazan Grewal reports, the fire is being treated as arson by investigators.

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a dog and setting a Mississauga home on fire.

Peel Regional Police were called to the residence on Atwater Avenue in the area of Lakeshore Road East and Cawthra Road shortly before noon for reports of a house on fire.

When fire crews arrived, they located a dog suffering from injuries in the doorway of the home, but a search revealed no one else was present.

“The circumstances of this are strange, to say the least,” explained Cst. Tyler Bell. “What we know to be true now is that the fire was intentionally set. We have taken a male youth into custody, who is associated with the address and believed to be responsible for both the fire and the injuries sustained by the animal.”

A 15-year-old male youth was charged with killing or injuring animals and arson causing damage to property. He was not identified by means of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Bell could not confirm reports that the dog was found with stab wounds but said it had been taken to a local animal hospital for treatment.

A neighbour familiar with the family tells CityNews that the injured animal is a therapy dog.

The youth was held for a bail hearing. The investigation is ongoing.
