Man, 3-year-old daughter dead following Pickering crash

A devastating crash in Pickering after a father and his young child were fatally struck by a vehicle. Afua Baah has the details on what police are saying about the two separate collisions that led to this tragedy.

A man and his young daughter are dead following a collision in Pickering on Tuesday night where the pair were struck by a vehicle while crossing the road, police said.

Officers in Durham Region were called to Taunton Road and Brock Road at around 8 p.m. for a multi-vehicle crash.

Authorities said a three-year-old girl and her father were involved in a collision with another vehicle that caused their Honda to go into a ditch. Police tell 680 NewsRadio that the father then grabbed the young girl and was attempting to cross Taunton Road when they were struck by an oncoming vehicle.

The young girl was transported to a Toronto-area hospital while her 40-year-old father was rushed to a local hospital, both with life-threatening injuries.

Police told 680 NewsRadio on Wednesday that the three-year-old girl and her father died.

The driver who struck the father and daughter, a 52-year-old man from Ajax, remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. Investigators say it’s unlikely he will face any charges.

“Potentially, the occupants were walking back to the initial collision site to speak with the second driver; however, we don’t have that confirmed,” said Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Const. Nicholas Gluckstein.

The intersection was closed for several hours as a result of the investigation, which is ongoing.
