Elderly man dies in Markham house fire

A man in his 70s has died after a fire broke out at a semi-detached home near Woodbine Avenue and Major Mackenzie Drive. As Jazan Grewal reports, neighbouring homes were forced to evacuate as a result of the blaze.

An elderly man has died after a house caught fire in Markham.

Fire crews were called to Pillar Rock Crescent and Hazelton Avenue on Thursday afternoon.

When firefighters arrived a woman was outside and told them there was a man still inside. He was found in a hallway by crews.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene while a second person was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The fire is now under control, but damage to the structure is significant and not safe to assess at this time. An early investigation indicates that the fire started in the garage that had a vehicle in it.

There were working smoke alarms in the home.

Neighbouring homes were also evacuated, including one that is attached to the damaged house.
