1 dead as multi-vehicle crash closes Highway 11 in Orillia

One person is dead following a multi-vehicle crash which has forced the closure of a portion of Highway 11 in Orillia due to heavy snow and treacherous driving conditions.

OPP Acting Sgt. Jake Daynes says at least 10 vehicles were involved in the crash, possibly more, which resulted in the death of a 49-year-old and sent 11 people to an area hospital with various injuries.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 11 were closed for most of the day before reopening just after 11 p.m. Friday night.

Photos from the highway show heavy snow accumulation and stopped vehicles. Orillia was one of several southeastern Ontario regions under a snow squall warning as of Friday, with 10 to 20 cm of snow forecasted until the evening.
