Suspected impaired driver drove wrong way on QEW for 20 kilometres: OPP

A 54-year-old Hamilton resident who allegedly drove around 20 kilometres the wrong direction on the QEW from Hamilton to Grimsby while impaired is now facing numerous charges, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said in a release.

The OPP says it received numerous calls from the public about the vehicle, which was spotted driving the wrong way in the Toronto-bound lanes from Nikola Tesla Blvd., in Hamilton at around 2:43 a.m. Wednesday morning.

“An officer from the Burlington detachment, driving the proper direction with traffic travelling in the Fort Erie-bound lanes of the QEW was able to catch up to the wrong-way vehicle near Christie Street in Grimsby as it continued to drive Fort Erie-bound in the Toronto-bound lanes,” an OPP release explains.

“The officer was able to get the attention of the driver using their emergency equipment and the vehicle then turned around. A second OPP officer from the Niagara detachment was able to locate the vehicle and stop it near Casablanca Blvd.”

Carolann Tost, 54, is facing charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired (80 plus), drive vehicle – no licence, and novice driver B.A.C. above zero.

Tost is scheduled to appear in court on March 17.
