Maple Leafs win Atlantic Divison, will play Senators in playoffs

By Sportsnet Staff

For the first time since the league was re-aligned in 2013, the Toronto Maple Leafs have finally added an Atlantic Division title to their resume.

The title was clinched after the Maple Leafs took down the Buffalo Sabres 4-0 on Tuesday night, putting them out of reach of the second-place Tampa Bay Lightning.

With the win, the Maple Leafs confirmed their upcoming opponent for the post-season, pencilling in a “Battle of Ontario” rivalry series against the Ottawa Senators in the first round.

They also secured home ice throughout the first two rounds of the playoffs, at least.

It was also a milestone night for a pair of Maple Leafs forwards with Mitch Marner recording his first-ever 100-point season after scoring late in the third period.

Then after the Sabres pulled the goalie for an extra attacker, Auston Matthews was able to net his 400th career goal.

Of course, this is not the first division title to the Maple Leafs’ name, who now add a seventh banner to their collection. In the 2020-21 shortened season, they came out on top of the Canadian-comprised North Division.

Prior to that win, the Leafs last won a division title in the 1999-2000 season when they played in the Northeast Division. The Leafs went 62 years between division titles after winning the Canadian Division in 1938, however, divisions were cut from the NHL from the 1938-39 season to the 1966-67 season.
