Woman, 78, killed in Ajax crash, second female driver seriously injured

A 78-year-old woman died following a multi-vehicle crash in Ajax on Wednesday.

Durham Regional Police Service officers were called to the Kingston Road West and Elizabeth Street area at around 1 p.m. for reports of a collision.

Police said the driver of a grey Honda HR-V was travelling eastbound on Kingston Road West when it crossed the westbound lanes, striking a silver Dodge Journey head-on. The Dodge Journey was then struck by a red Mazda Protégé travelling westbound on Kingston Road West.

The 78-year-old female driver of the Honda HR-V was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The female driver of the Dodge Journey was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where she remains in serious condition. Her age was not provided.

No other injuries were reported.

The investigation is ongoing.
