A man was shot and killed during a shootout with police in Mississauga early Saturday morning.
According to Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), a woman contacted police at approximately 12:30 a.m. to report a domestic-related incident and told officers that her husband left the home with a gun.
Shortly after, Peel Regional Police spotted the suspect and confronted him in a residential area between Fifth Line and Erin Mills Parkway, near Dundas Street West.
According to the SIU, a short foot pursuit ensued, followed by an exchange of gunfire.
Four officers discharged their firearms, an SIU spokesperson revealed. The suspect was struck multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say the man was known to police and that multiple firearms were recovered at the scene. Officers believe one gun was involved in the shootout and another was allegedly discarded by the suspect down the road.
Police say the man was not a licenced firearm owner.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police, among other officials, that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
