Environment Canada has issued a yellow rainfall warning for Toronto and parts of the GTA, with 20 to 40 mm expected on Saturday.
“A Colorado low will bring rain to the area Saturday, beginning with periods of rain during the day,” the national weather agency wrote in a statement.
“A line of heavy showers and possible thunderstorms is expected to track through this evening. The heaviest rain will occur in areas that receive thunderstorms.”
Environment Canada says people should watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts, as the heavy rainfall will cause water to pool on roads and in low-lying areas, and that visibility could suddenly be reduced at times during the downpour.
The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority issued a flood outlook message Saturday morning, advising that all shorelines, rivers and streams in the region should be considered dangerous as rainfall may cause water levels to change rapidly.
The soggy Saturday preceded an unseasonably warm day on Friday, where temperatures climbed to 21°C.
Similar rainfall warnings are in effect for most of southern Ontario and the GTHA, from London to Ottawa and north to Barrie and Orillia. Regions north of there, into cottage country, can expect up to 50 mm of rainfall.
The weather agency also issued a special weather alert for parts of northern Ontario where some areas could be buried under up to 30 centimetres of snow.
“Travel will likely be challenging. Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will likely be reduced at times,” it said.
Easter Sunday is expected to be cool and unsettled in Toronto, marking a sharp contrast from the early‑week warmth. A high of only 6°C is forecast with lingering cloud cover and the chance of showers.
Easter Monday will feel more like early March than April, with a forecast high of 3°C and a mix of sun and cloud. Overnight lows are expected to dip below freezing, and some areas could even see a few flurries.
