EB 401 reopens after tractor-trailer crash

A section of the eastbound Highway 401 in Mississauga has reopened after a truck slammed into a concrete barrier and burst into flames before dawn Tuesday.

The OPP shut down the area between Mavis Road and Hurontario Street after the tractor-trailer crashed around 4:45 a.m.

“The vehicle then, on impact, all of the sudden went up in flames and proceeded some 100 metres down the highway in flames before it actually came to a stop,” OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford said.

The fire caused damage to the road and repairs are expected to stretch into the afternoon.

Amazingly, there are no reports of serious injury. The driver hurt his knee and was taken to hospital.

Some debris flew over into the westbound lanes, prompting a temporary closure on that side of the highway.
