Most of the time you see CityNews reporter Melissa Grelo, she’s doing her part for to bring you the latest from in and around Toronto. But on Saturday, she was donning a different look, trading in her microphone for a pair of stirrups and some riding pants.
For close to 30 years the Grelo family has bred, trained and performed with horses at their Cedar Mills farm, all for a variety of good causes, the most recent of which is the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
“The OSPCA gets no government funding so all of our money is raised through donations and fundraising events,” said Barb McCreath of the group’s Orangeville branch.
Even in a small animal shelter like the one McCreath runs in Orangeville, the lofty operating costs can nudge the $500,000 mark annually. An evening show Saturday featured 17 horses, all led by Melissa’s own father, Frank who hoped to chip in a least a fraction of that total.
“It is a good cause, and for that reason and for the animals, that’s exactly the purpose why we all do that,” he said.
All of the money raised Saturday will go to the Orangeville OSPCA.
