Katy Perry greets fans outside Toronto Eaton Centre

Pop star Katy Perry greeted fans in front of Toronto Eaton Centre on Thursday afternoon wearing fake cat ears and a fitted purple dress with matching sweater.

The singer, who’s touring in Canada, made a promotional appearance outside the Sears entrance on Yonge Street to promote her new perfume Purr. It was supposed to begin at 3 p.m. but didn’t get underway until 4:20 p.m., lasting about 15 minutes.

“It’s very exciting to bring Purr to Canada,” Perry told a cheering crowd of about 1,000.

Fans asked the singer about her favourite song (Firework), her role models (Grace Kelly, Betty Boop, Wonder Woman and Lolita) and her next record (ask her again when her current tour ends in December). And then she climbed down from the stage to shake some hands.

One fan, Michelle Holly of Oakville, said she has tickets to see Perry perform on Thursday evening at the Air Canada Centre. She was shopping at the mall and wasn’t aware that the pop singer would be making an appearance Thursday until she saw the large crowd waiting for her.

Perry kicked off the Canadian leg of her California Dreams World Tour in Toronto Wednesday night.

The singer, who’s married to comedian Russell Brand, will sing next in Montreal and Ottawa before her tour heads west.

Yonge is closed between Edward and Richmond Streets until 6 p.m.
