Upcoming provincial election a tight three-way race: poll

The provincial election is gearing up to be a race anybody could win, according to a new Toronto Star-Angus Reid public opinion poll.

The poll, released Wednesday, puts public support for the three major parties in very close contention.

Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak is at 38 per cent, Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty is at 31 per cent and NDP Leader Andrea Horwath sits at 24 per cent. Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner has 6 per cent support.

Campaigning for the Oct. 6 election is officially set to begin next Wednesday. Hudak kicked off his campaign Monday in Toronto.

McGuinty’s performance so far hasn’t exactly wowed voters, according to the poll, which shows only 24 per cent said his Liberals should be re-elected. Twenty per cent said they didn’t know if there was a need for change.

It seems that Ontarians aren’t thrilled with the choices of candidates in this election. McGuinty’s approval rating is at 33 per cent, with 57 per cent of respondents disapproving of his job performance. Hudak’s approval rating is at 35 per cent and 45 per cent disapproval, while Horwath is slightly better at 39 per cent approval and 27 per cent disapproval.

Angus Reid interviewed 1,002 people earlier this week and results are accurate to within 3.16 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
