Mike Tyson Gets One Day In Jail

They used to call him ‘Iron’ because he was built like a tank and could routinely and quite easily separate his quivering opponents from consciousness. But these days, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson’s nickname has more to do with the type of bars he’ll soon be peering through.
Tyson was sentenced to 24 hours in jail on Monday and three years probation following convictions for cocaine possession and driving under the influence.
The former champ pled guilty to the charges in September, and has since completed a rehab program.
“I take responsibility for my actions,” Tyson said before facing sentencing.
Tyson was facing a possible maximum sentence of four years and three months in prison and prosecutor Shane Krauser seemed determined to put him behind bars for at least a year — the time he recommended.
“Judge, by my calculations, this is his fourth or fifth chance,” Krauser noted.
But Tyson’s lawyer David Chesnoff stressed that his client had taken and passed 29 drug tests since his arrest and that he routinely attends Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
That seemed to impress Superior Court Judge Helene Abrams.
“You worked to address your addiction and self-destructive behaviour,” Abrams said, before doling out her sentence.
