Toronto police officers no longer filling in for school crossing guards

By News Staff

School is back in session, but Toronto police officers will no longer be filling in for crossing guards who can’t make it in to work.

Neptune Security Services, which now has a contract with the city, will provide their replacements instead.

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) said the move is part of its plan to modernize the force, including dispatching officers to where they’re needed the most.

For this school year, the force will continue to manage the program, which employs about 600 crossing guards. The city’s Transportation Services Division will take over in September 2019.

The plan also says the TPS will no longer manage the lifeguard program for the city’s 13 beaches.

Both the $6.8-million crossing guard budget and $1.1-million lifeguard budget will ultimately be handled by the city.
