One of them was supposed to be a new home for a family. The other two were already occupied. At least two of them are now gone.
A raging fire spread between three townhouses in Brampton on Friday, and while everyone got out unharmed, there’s not much left of some of the structures.
One of the buildings, on Iverson Dr. in the Bovaird and Creditview area, was under construction and had only its framing up. Two more were occupied and the families were to forced to flee as the flames spread.
Residents were stunned by the commotion.
“I heard the yelling and seen people running back and forth. I came outside…there was about 50 people outside and I seen the houses up in smoke,” said Jessica Kaczala, who lives in the neighbourhood.
“I was in my room and my auntie, she started shouting, and I was like what happened? And we came out. The house was all on fire. The flames were so high,” adds Manica Thakur.
A large trash bin near the unfinished home was also engulfed by flames.
“There were three detached homes on fire when the fire crews arrived,” explains Acting Deputy Chief Gary Langerquist. “The first of the three was a home under construction, which has been totally destroyed. The two occupied homes have been damaged by the fire. One heavily damaged and the other with minor damage.”
Brampton crews rushed to the scene around the noon hour and had their hands full the moment they arrived. “We have five pumpers on the scene and two aerial trucks,” confirms Langerquist. “Both aerials were up operating as water towers, a total of 30 firefighters.”
Fortunately, crews were able to tame the flames without too much trouble. “Initially the intensity of the flames drove the firefighters from one of the homes,” the Chief explains. “But they got it under control very quickly.
But their duty came with a price. Two firefighters were transported to Brampton Civic Hospital, one suffering from smoke inhalation, the other a back injury.
No one else was hurt.
There’s no damage total yet and the cause remains a mystery.
