First Generation Students To Receive Funding From The Province

First generation students interested in higher education are about to receive a helping hand from the provincial government.

Premier Dalton McGuinty devoted $5 million to helping youths become the first in their family to attend either college or university or an apprenticeship program. The cash will go to programs run by schools and community groups.

Another $1 million will go toward Ontario First Generation Student Bursaries for the 2006-07 school year, McGuinty announced at the Seneca College campus in northeast Toronto.

The program was started due to a perceived lack of information for first generation students about the benefits of post-secondary education.

The lack of role models with degrees, reduced expectations and lower confidence are all seen as challenges in getting students to continue their education beyond high school.

In announcing the funding, the premier said statistics showed that if neither parent went to a post-secondary institution there’s a good chance their children won’t go either.
