On a day when it never really stopped raining, the Blue Jays managed to have a lot more fun in the Fenway Park slop than the hometown Red Sox.
Looking to finish strong in their series against Boston, the Jays jumped all over their hosts Sunday en route to a 6-1 win and subsequent series split.
Toronto starter Gustavo Chacin (7-3) put together his best outing in a season marred by a stretch of injuries and rebounded from a couple of brutal outings by going six innings and allowing just two hits. Jason Frasor and Jeremy Accardo combined for the final three frames and closed the deal in a constant downpour that actually delayed the first pitch by more than an hour.
Chacin’s counterpart, Josh Beckett (14-10), wasn’t quite as sharp, getting hit hard off the bat and tagged with three runs on five hits over five innings.
Most of the damage done at the dish for Toronto came from catcher Bengie Molina, who had four hits to go with an RBI and a run scored. Fellow backstop Gregg Zaun and minor league call-up Kevin Barker also had two hits a piece. One of Barker’s was his first home run of the season over the famed Green Monster.
The Red Sox on the other hand continued to struggle at the plate without Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz. The 2004 World Series champs could only muster seven hits and four of them, including Doug Mirabelli’s RBI single, came in the ninth off of Accardo.
The Jays will now return to Toronto for a Labour Day matinee against the Cleveland Indians. The Indians swept the Blue Birds over three last week and will be eager to build on a recent hot streak and validate an otherwise disappointing season.
The opener will feature Shaun Marcum (2-3) for the Jays, against C.C. Sabathia (10-8) for the Tribe.
