Family Of Canadian Killed On 9/11 Recall Last Phone Call

The family of one of the Canadians killed in the September 11 th terror attacks marked the anniversary in Toronto on Monday.

Ken Basnicki was in New York City on business five years ago to the day.   He was in the north tower when the plane hit.   But before the buildings crumbled, he was able to make one last phone call.

“He phoned me, and his voice kind of sounded funny, and he says, ‘Mom, this is Ken.’ I says ‘Yep.’ He says, ‘I’m on the 105th floor at the World Trade Center. We’ve been hit.’   But what he was talking about, I did not know,” recalls Jean Basnicki.

“He says, “There’s a lot of smoke here. I don’t know how we’re going to get down here.”

Not thinking twice, I says, “Keep in touch.”

Moments later the building would crumble.   Five years later, the pain is still there.

“To remember 9/11, to be honest with you, it’s very hard for me to try to ignore it, because well, you know, it’s your first son. Let’s face it. And he was a good son,” she adds.

Ken’s nephew Ryan shared similar sentiments.

“It’s a sad day, and I just don’t like remembering it, but I have to.”
