The Special Investigations Unit is looking into the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man in midtown Toronto on Saturday night.
According to the provincial police watchdog, ambulance personnel contacted police at around 8:30 p.m. to assist them with a man who was in mental distress at a building at 1815 Yonge Street.
When police arrived, they made their way to a third floor unit where they encountered a man with a knife in the hallway.
The SIU says the man approached officers and began stabbing at one of them, which resulted in two officers discharging their taser weapons.
“When this proved to have no effect, the second officer discharged his firearm one time at the man,” the SIU said in a statement. “The man was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.”
The officer who had been stabbed along with three other policemen were also taken to hospital. No update on their condition was provided.
The SIU says it has designated one subject official and four witness officials as part of their investigation.
The SIU is called in to investigate the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
