They were named group of the year, and their latest album “All the Right Reasons” was named rock album of the year. The boys were also lucky enough to share the stage with Kid Rock and ZZ Top to close out the show, playing the tune “Looking for some Touch.”
But if anyone cleaned up, it was veteran R&B singer Mary J. Blige. The 35-year-old won nine awards, including R&B/Hip-Hop artist of the year and R&B/Hip-Hop album of the year for “The Breakthrough.”
It’s sold 2.6 million copies since its release last December.
“I’ve realized if I don’t (love) myself, nobody will. Nobody is going to love me more than I do,” Blige said after the show.
But it wasn’t just an evening for mainstays – newcomers Rihanna and Carrie Underwood also won awards.
And despite reports that new best friends Paris Hilton and Britney Spears would be taking a break from partying to co-host the awards show, neither appeared. Instead of a host, a lineup of presenters filled in.
They weren’t the only no-shows: Las Vegas band The Killers backed out because singer Brandon Flowers was ill.
The Billboard Awards are handed out based on the magazine’s year-end chart listings, based on sales and airplay.
